Top-reel or inverted flow wrapper?

Reel position and film path change how the product is supported, where the longitudinal seal is formed and how difficult products move through the wrapper.

The distinction is the film path and product support

In a conventional top-reel flow wrapper, film is normally delivered from above and formed around a product travelling on the infeed. In an inverted or bottom-film arrangement, film is introduced beneath the product so the product can be carried or supported by the film through part of the wrapping path. The final longitudinal-seal position and exact film route vary by design, so drawings and trial packs should be used rather than relying on terminology alone.

Neither architecture is automatically better. The choice depends on whether the product can be pushed and transferred consistently, whether contact with belts or guides marks it, and where the finished longitudinal seal is acceptable.

When a conventional top-reel layout is often practical

Regular, stable and reasonably rigid products that can be presented between flights are common candidates. The arrangement can provide a direct product path, familiar format setup and a conventional underside fin seal, subject to the selected former and machine design.

When an inverted layout is worth assessing

Bottom-film or inverted handling may help when products are soft, sticky, delicate, irregular, grouped or difficult to push across transfers. Supporting the item on the film can reduce some mechanical contact, but it also changes film threading, cleaning, product loading and seal-position considerations. Suitability must be demonstrated with the actual product and production-grade film.

  • Can the product tolerate flight contact and pushing forces?
  • Does it slide consistently across belts, dead plates and the former?
  • Will crumbs, oil, moisture or residue transfer to film or machine surfaces?
  • Where may the longitudinal seal sit without affecting presentation or opening?
  • Can operators load safely and ergonomically at the required rate?
  • How will the film path be accessed for threading, cleaning and changeover?
  • What happens to the product and film during an emergency stop or short interruption?
